Google Inc (GOOG) Adds Lyrics, Google Play To Search

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) has made a move to refine search results and will now display music lyrics at the top of the search results page. The song lyrics results mostly point to its Google Play app.  The new feature will allow web users to search for a song name plus the lyrics on Google. The move is expected to adversely impact music lyric sites that have previously ranked high in Google Search. Such sites are likely to suffer from reduced traffic in the wake of the music lyrics search tweaks by Google.

Google is not the only Internet search provider to take action that increases the visibility of song lyrics. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) also made changes to Bing earlier this year. The changes saw music lyrics being shown above the search results on Bing.

Knowledge Graph project

In the case of Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL), the search tweaks in relation to song lyrics is part of the Knowledge Graph project. Through the project, Google is trying to enhance its search results with the data obtained from various sources that include Freebase, Google Books, Wikipedia, and the World CIA Fact book.

According to industry insiders, the addition of music lyrics to Knowledge Graph comes as an effort from Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) to promote its own content above that of third-party websites. That is seen because the song lyrics searches that appear at the top of the results page point to Google Play. That also explains why third-party music lyrics sites may also be confronted by reduced visits in the wake of the changes.

The third-party sites that are likely to feel the most of the heat following the changes in lyrics search results are those that have purely relied on SEO to promote their content. Nonetheless, Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) currently appears to be working with a limited database of lyrics. That also appears to suggest that the company is not simply doing away with content from other lyrics sites that have gained fame on its platform
